クリスマスローズの淡い花。

この時期に咲くのになんでクリスマスなんだろうか？

クリスマスローズはキンポウゲ科の宿根草で、学名をヘレボルスといいます。原種系のヘレボルス・ニゲルは12月半ばから2月くらいまで花が咲きます。

クリスマスローズとは、そのニゲルを指した名前で、ちょうどクリスマスの頃に咲くバラのような花、というのが名前の由来。

2月下旬から咲き出し、早春から春の庭を美しく彩るのはヘレボルス・オリエンタリスという系統。日本ではオリエンタリスも含んでクリスマスローズと呼んでいます。
